New Feature: Stone Soup

It’s back-of-the-cupboard time, gang.

As we shelter in place and stay safer at home and lock our doors and avoid the hell that is the grocery store, many of us are exhausting our recipe boxes and our pantries. We’re staring at the can of pears, the half-used bag of coconut shreds, the novelty hot sauce, the dried lentils — and we’re asking ourselves, how the fuck am I going to make these ingredients into food?

Let’s see if we can figure it out together. Here’s how this works:

  • Send me an email with your Problem Ingredient — the thing you can’t figure out what to do with.
  • In that email, include some of the other things in your cupboard, freezer, and spice rack - butter, honey, frozen bananas, the hambone you saved from last Easter, the bouillon cubes you inherited from your grandmother, the frozen puff pastry you bought in a fit of ambition but never got around to using.
  • I’ll write you a recipe. I’ll post a new recipe on here, and whoever wants to try them can try them.

Sometimes I’ll cobble something together for common requests, like beans and flour. Sometimes I’ll use an individual request that creates a particularly fun or interesting dish. If I can’t figure it out, I’ll tell you so.

But maybe, together, we can make your next meal feel a little less impossible.
