No on KOSA

Welcome to the Stone Soup Weekly Digest! This is where I share what I'm up to and some of my favorite things from around the internet. Subscribe to Stone Soup to get this in your inbox every week.

If you’re looking for ways to take care of those who deeply need it right now, here’s where you can start:

Vote No on the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA)

This deceptively named bill aims to increase the surveillance powers of the state in the US, and restrict access to information under the guise of protecting children while they’re online. The Electronic Frontier Foundation has a great article explaining why KOSA is bad for everyone, including kids but especially communities of traditionally marginalized people. The function of this bill is to cut off vulnerable people from communities and information, and it’s absolutely critical that the bill does not pass.

Following the events in Network Effect, the Barish-Estranza corporation has sent rescue ships to a newly-colonized planet in peril, as well as additional SecUnits. But if there’s an ethical corporation out there, Murderbot has yet to find it, and if Barish-Estranza can’t have the planet, they’re sure as hell not leaving without something. If that something just happens to be an entire colony of humans, well, a free workforce is a decent runner-up prize.

But there’s something wrong with Murderbot; it isn’t running within normal operational parameters. ART’s crew and the humans from Preservation are doing everything they can to protect the colonists, but with Barish-Estranza’s SecUnit-heavy persuasion teams, they’re going to have to hope Murderbot figures out what’s wrong with itself, and fast!
