Supper Club Scrapbook: October 2026
What a month! The thing that’s most making me say “what a month” happened in November—holy shit y’all those Midterms—but I’ll stick to October for our purposes here. My month was pretty wild and involved a trip to Chicago, a trip to Ottawa, and… a trip to the ER (everything is fine). I made a feast for an out-of-country guest, looked inside the walls of my home (there are pipes!), saw a real ghost, and saw a ton of pretend ghosts when I helped my pals hand out candy on Halloween. I am skidding into November with my hair on fire. This month will be easier! Or else.

I'm tabling at today's no kings and I'm right in front of this set up. It's intense.

I made this Rocky Mountains cake for my son's birthday and it turned out so, so well! This is what happens when you watch all 16 seasons of Great British Bake Off, lol. I used this sponge recipe for a patterned roll cake, but wrapped it around a layer cake instead. It was fun to make but took like six hours.

Snohomish county misprinted a batch of ballots and I am delighted to have received one.

I found the perfect pumpkin today.

Courtesy of D Franklin having an excellent idea, Speculative Insight got together four folks—Bogi Takacs, So Mayer, Caitlin McDonough-Goldstein, and Ann LeBlanc—to discuss Cameron Reed’s What We Are Seeking. It's available in three formats which will hopefully make it accessible to most. It's a really crunchy discussion about identity and colonialism and place and... lots of good things!

Here, a cleaned up teethy hog photo, suitable for adding to the spooky season email.
This is Nettle yawning and looking excellently vampiric. Her teeth are as sharp as they look and I do sometimes have tiny little vampire marks where she's bitten me, mostly by accident these days when she's trying to chew on my clothes.
She's gotten very polite about warning me when I'm annoying her and will open her mouth near my hand slowly enough that I can move away.
We took her to the vet a couple weeks ago for her yearly check up and her teeth got praised as very clean and healthy. Correspondingly, her breath is always nice as well and her tongue is very soft although feeling it means you might taste like something she wants to bite.

Went on a haunted history tour with my neighbor friends last night. It was really fun and interesting (the tour guide was a whole vibe). Got a couple of nice night shots, including one where someone moved and it kinda looks like a ghost.

We moved house! It was SO MUCH but we did it and now we get to unpack and make this house ours. For some reason, every book I’m reading is about hauntings…

We adopted a cat! His name is Sargon

I made swan wallpaper.

I am almost done with an 8-week intro wheel throwing workshop and these little cuties are bisqued and should be coming out of the glaze firing next week and I’m so excited.

UPDATE: I got one of my glazed pieces back!

I’ve been getting into whittling this month! (The cup and spoon aren’t done, but they’re my current projects and it’s been fun to watch them progress; the figurines are all from the first two weeks I was figuring this out.)

The past few months have been a numb blur of burnout and book revisions and other super stressful life events so I never really got to power down this summer. Now that some things have settled more, I snuck back to the cabin this last weekend for my revenge. Got to spend a few autumn days doing some cozy cognitive reset activities. Pictured here: Putting together a 1000 piece puzzle, listening to an audiobook, and staring at fire.

Pyrodino
Something small and stupid, but it brought me ridiculous joy. Putting together the final touches on Halloween costume and made a Rocky enclosure for the crocheted Rocky, complete with magnetic seal.

My small way of protesting in my very conservative city. Can’t believe my house hasn’t been egged lol
Anyway welcome to another year of the ideological graveyard

I did one of those October art challenges with linocuts on erasers! it was really nice to just play around for the joy of it, and I'm actually quite happy with several of these 🙌
