How we showed up for each other and ourselves in May

Welcome to this month’s Supper Club Scrapbook! In the Supper Club Discord, we share what we’re working on, what we’re excited about, and how we’re showing up for our neighbors. Every month, I’ll be sharing a little cross-section of what our community is up to.

May was really special to me. Make Me Better came out at long last – the book I spent six years working on, the book that changed my life, the hardest thing I’ve ever written. It was so incredible to have it out in the world, and to travel the country meeting so many of you and introducing you to it. I really felt every inch of  how lucky I am to have this job.

Nothing else happened in May that I can share yet – but man, a lot of it was really cool. I can’t wait to get to tell you about it all someday. In the meantime, let’s get to the scrapbook!

Spring is rough for me generally and a good friend suggested we go on a “retreat” at her family’s cabin in Kittelfjäll. Just the two of us in the off-season of a ski resort town. Sounded like the set-up for a thriller, or a really chill week with a friend. It was the latter! Lots of great and inspiring conversations. I focused on projects I rarely allow myself the time to luxuriate in: 1) my super ambitious knit project inspired by Tove Jansson illustrations and 2) video game design inspiration. We might make it a tradition. The First Annual Kittelfjäll Creative Residency.

odd angle photo from someone sitting beside a person in a lawn chair wrapped in colorful blanket, two cups of coffee on the table between them with a brightly colored intarsia-style knit project beside the cups. Clear day with view of snowy mountains in the distance.

Finished a dinosaur-themed collection! looks particularly good as bedding, I think! for kids of all ages.

Made it to Mysterious Galaxy with my work bestie. We planned on spending twenty minutes browsing. We spent an hour and a half and walked away with more books than could fit in our luggage. (We both had to get creative.)

I’ve started doing summer porch hours where I commit to sitting on my back porch for a few hours every week, and people can come hang out and drink lemonade if they want. It has been so nice to be outside and spend low-stakes/low-stress time with friends and commit to weekly rest.

I spent the weekend putting my art in photo albums scrapbook style and I'm so pleased with the result. There's 250 pieces and counting, the plastic envelope I was carrying them around in broke and they were getting damaged so it was well overdue.

So, we have this little juniper bonsai tree (named Juni, short for Juniper Ascending) and we’re only supposed to give it plant food in the summer. So I set a recurring calendar reminder to go off during the summer months.

Except I set it with Siri. And Siri didn’t hear me say “Feed Juni.” So cue my confusion this morning when I was met with a calendar reminder to simply FEED.
